Welcome Home
As part of my thesis project (RISD, MFA Illustration, ‘24) I created an immersive fantasy bedroom. I designed every aspect of this space, including the bedding, the toys that were chained to it, video, and sculptural elements within it. I chose to create a full-scale immersive fantasy bedroom aimed at breaking down some of the barriers that exist between the gallery and the gallery-goer. Viewers were invited to explore- brushing the furry wall, digging for treasure in a sandbox, and stepping on a squeaky rug.
Embedded within the room are clues about growing older and and the loss of innocence. This window portal is a clue into the terrifying outside reality that exists as a separate entity from the warm protection of the bedroom safe space. The curtains are printed with a textile that shows houses on fire. A scared creature peers reluctantly from a house built of matches- the sky is a nuclear shade of orange and mounds, which initially appear as hills, are actually piles of trash. A flower with eyes peers back at you. You are being watched. I want to create a creeping feeling of unease about the state of the world.
